ROADMAP

What's Next for Filmtone

Our development priorities, shaped by real creative workflows. Features move from idea to release as they prove their value.

Released

  • Batch JPEG / PNG grading

Grade entire folders at once — apply your chosen preset to every image in a directory.

  • Single video export

Apply the same look to one short MP4 and export with your grade baked in.

  • 4 film-inspired presets

Kodak Portra 400, Fuji Pro 400H, Kodak Ektar 100, and Ilford HP5 Plus.

  • Browser demo

Try presets on your own photos before downloading the desktop app.

  • Share your look via URL

Generate a link that opens the browser demo with your exact preset settings.

  • Desktop v0.3 — export & preview refinement

Clearer switching between photo batch export and single-video export, fewer mistakes bridging the graded preview into export defaults, aligned edit/export chrome, a searchable preset picker, and automatic video preview pause while export is busy.

  • Web demo preview tuning (v0.3)

Adjusted preview sizing and media presentation in the browser demo for a closer match to Desktop.

  • Desktop v0.4 — film process controls

Compression, compression range, print contrast, and cyan / magenta / yellow trim — aligned between the browser demo preview and Desktop export.

  • Quick / Pro layout and Film Stock picker (v0.4)

Quick stays on the shortest path; Pro exposes process, artifacts, source trim, and LUT in order. Preset surfaces group film stocks with clearer boundaries (including stocks like Velvia 50).

  • Video preview transport (v0.4.2)

Play/pause, timeline scrub, timecode, and Space to toggle playback on Web and Desktop — with locks during export or preview hold, and safe interaction alongside Compare mode.

  • Pro panel vocabulary & inline hints (v0.4.2)

Clearer Pro labels (film texture, source adjustments, color fringing), improved Japanese for Bloom/Halation, hover hints on collapsible headers, and a Bloom threshold tooltip.

  • Faster export for heavy codec sources (v0.4.3)

4K HEVC and other heavy format sources are automatically optimized before export, delivering up to 4× faster throughput.

  • Progressive preview for heavy footage (v0.5.1)

Heavy formats such as ProRes and 4K HEVC now open with an immediate native-decoded preview, then switch over to an optimized intermediate in the background for smoother work.

  • Portrait video + rebuilt motion blur (v0.5.1)

Vertical footage now displays in full-frame contain mode, and motion blur has been rebuilt around an eight-frame ring buffer with shutter-angle control.

  • Cross Filter optical effect (v0.6.0)

A new diffraction-style star filter for bright point lights, with controls for strength, point count, rotation, streak length, threshold, and chromatic split.

  • Proxy cache and video UX polish (v0.6.0)

Desktop now keeps progressive preview proxies in a bounded local cache, while compare dismissal, faster playback review, slider reset discoverability, and thumbnail/loading polish have all been improved.

  • Desktop stability and look polish (v0.6.1)

The launch-time update banner is back, preview recovery after export is more reliable, glow was retuned for black-mist night scenes, and hard cross-filter spacing now behaves more predictably.

  • Cross Filter product-surface cleanup (v0.6.2)

The public product surface now freezes Soft mode, normalises restored and shared state back to Hard, and replaces the old Spikes slider with direct 4 / 6 / 8 choices.

🔄 In Development

  • Preset expansion

Additional film stocks and creative looks beyond the initial four.

  • Preview/export parity for video and batch

Bring video export and batch output closer to the new WebGPU preview path so highlight rolloff and overall rendering match more reliably.

  • Portrait & non-16:9 video export resolution

Improving scaling so vertical sources are less likely to be shrunk more than needed, using a long-edge-oriented cap.

📋 Planned

  • Smart Look AI

AI-assisted image correction on Desktop — adjusts photos to better suit the chosen preset's look. Desktop-first; Web may follow later.

  • DNG / RAW support

Import and grade raw files directly without prior conversion.

  • Windows support

Bring Filmtone Desktop to Windows for broader accessibility.

  • External editor handoff (under evaluation)

Exploring a handoff path for Filmtone grades. No public format or editor workflow is promised until it ships.

  • Film-style develop step (under evaluation)

Exploring whether a dedicated develop-style stage fits Filmtone. Not included in v0.4; timing and scope are TBD.

💡 Considering

  • Mobile app

A lightweight mobile companion for quick grading on the go.

  • Cloud preset sync

Sync your custom presets across Desktop, Web, and Mobile.

  • Editor plugin integration

Integrate Filmtone presets directly into photo and video editing apps.

This roadmap reflects our current plans and may change. Items in Planned and Considering are not commitments.
